This course will explore the following: What is physical fitness?, the benefits of physical fitness, tests for physical fitness, principles of training for sports, leisure and fitness participation, the physiology of fitness (how the body works in training), current exercise programs to maintain fitness and suggested exercise precautions to prevent injury and prevent exercise burnout. Topics covered are current and apply to young people and adults alike as they work out to prepare for physical activity. This course is a proactive solution to the 1996 Surgeon General's Report on the alarming inactivity of Americans.

This course includes, but is not limited to, individual and group activities. Activities may include: indoor and outdoor climbing, rope work, orienteering, and obstacle courses for developing balance, agility and confidence, snow games, and individual and group initiative problems. The affective goals are: improved self-concept, increased level of agility and coordination, improved communication skills, improved group cooperation and peer support.

This course provides the students with the opportunity to participate in a variety of sports and activities. Emphasis is on developing a personal sense of wellness through diet, exercise, stress management and other related topics. Through a basic understanding of personal fitness, students will be encouraged to make healthy lifestyle choices.

This course will promote personal wellness through lifetime activities. Units in weight training, aerobics, golf, tennis, yoga, and relaxation will be taught.

Level: Open Grade Level 11-12
Prerequisite: 902 Project Adventure. Students must have 902 instructor approval. Activities offered are: Ropes, Compass, Nature Study, New Games, shelter building and belay techniques. There is an emphasis on student involvement and high elements.

This course is offered to students who wish to lose and/or maintain their weight and improve their physical condition and appearance in an effective and permanent manner. Activities include: aerobics, strength training and classroom work. Emphasis is on developing healthy lifetime changes in eating and exercise behaviors.

This course explores how we can help ourselves become and stay healthy, and be more productive and successful in our daily lives. Our health is our responsibility and with knowledge about ourselves, our internal and external environments, our safety habits and emergency medical techniques, we will learn how to live more fully, be capable of dealing with life's problems and possibly help others to do the same.

*Salem School Committee policy requires notification to parents regarding a course that "primarily involves human sexual education or human sexuality issues. This course will introduce lessons which deal with topics such as the anatomy and physiology of the reproductive system, conception, birth control and pregnancy, reproductive health and sexually transmitted diseases, HIV /AIDS education, sexual orientation, and teen dating. Parents who wish to exempt their child from any of the above portions of this Health course must send written notification of the specific topics to the Salem High School Principal.
