S.T.A.I. is an organization that was established several years ago to reach out to young people in Salem (specifically high school age).  It consists of Salem High School staff members and members of community organizations in Salem.  The following is a list of some of the organizations that take part in S.T.A.I. and what the services they have to offer to our students.

Program Name: The Massachusetts Vocational Rehabilitation Commission

Job Title: Qualified Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor

Mission statement of organization: To promote equality, empowerment and productive independence of individuals with disabilities.  These goals are achieved through enhancing and encouraging personal choice and risk-taking for independence and employment.  MRC is the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission and it has a Public Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) program for individuals with disabilities who what to go to work.

Age group served: High School through adult.

Program information:  MRCís program can help an eligible person with a disability to:  work with his/her special education counselor to develop an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and receive VR counseling; plan for a career; identify college and vocational training choices and help with financial aid applications; participate in paid work experiences and on-the-job training; get training to achieve work goals; work with employers or colleges to ensure needed reasonable accommodations, assistive technology and other supports are received; find a job that matches the personís abilities, interests, and needs.

Program Name:  Museum Action Corps Internships (MAC)

Mission Statement of Organization:  On June 21, 2003, the Peabody Essex Museum emerges from a $125 million transformation and takes its place as one of the nationís premier museums of art and culture.  With more than 250,000 square feet of new and renovated exhibition and public spaces, the new Peabody Essex will showcase New Englandís significant artistic and cultural heritage, as well as outstanding collections from Asia, Africa, Native American, and Oceania.

Founded by merchant adventurers in 1799, the Peabody Essex Museum is the oldest continuously operating museum in the country.  The museumís collection contains 2.4 million works from China, Japan, Korea, India, Native American art, architecture and design, American decorative art, maritime art and history, photography, and the nationís premier collection of art and culture from New England, plus the distinguished manuscript and book collection of the Phillipís Library.

Program Information:  This unique internship program housed by the Peabody Essex Museum, provides opportunities for a culturally diverse group of students from Massachusetts, ages 16-21, to learn about museums first-hand and to gain valuable professional work experience.  This federally-funded program combines paid, museum-based employment with leadership and creativity development to broaden studentsí perspectives on work and their role as members of various communities.

Program Name: Salem CyberSpace

Mission statement of organization: Salem CyberSpace expands the educational and career opportunities for low-income youth and adults, thereby providing the foundation for achievement and self-sufficiency.  Utilizing state-of-the-art technology and innovative curricula, we successfully meet our goals for English Literacy, computer literacy, workplace readiness, and job internships.

Age group served: Grades 9-12

Program information: Cyberyouth consists of the following Programs;  
  • Academic Center, Monday-Thursday, 2 p.m.-6 p.m., homework help and tutoring, activities, field trips, and speakers.
  • ELL St.  open to ESL Students who want to improve their English at a rapid pace.  We use technology including blogging and video to accomplish our goals.  Tuesday, Thursday 6 p.m.-8 p.m.
  • College Prep:  open to juniors and seniors who need help in SAT or PSAT test prep and preparation of college essays, application, and FAFSA forms.


CyberCorps is a web design job internship.  This is a paid position (minimum wage) and is open to any high school student who has both an interest in digital design and computers.  Like any job, the student must apply for the job and demonstrate the right skills and attitude for the job.  Currently, we have two positions open.
