Adjustment to School, Change and Personal Growth

All Freshmen participate in the a freshmen seminar course throughout their freshmen year. This course is broken into 4 quarters. The Guidance component which is one of these quarters involves the freshmen participating in classroom discussions with a guidance counselor. The major focus of these discussions will be an orientation to the students of the policies, practices and expectations of Salem High School with regard to the student's own personal responsibilities in the educational process. The topics in these discussions will be informative and instructive with a heavy emphasis on self-actualization and participation by the student.

In addition all freshmen are introduced to the NAVIANCE Program. The primary focus is to explore a students own learning styles and to develop strategies to maximize their learning experience.

Topics will include the following:

  • Review of the year's academic schedule
  • Discussion of five week's progress reports
  • Possibility of weekly progress reports in specific classes
  • Changing classes, changing levels/SHS policies
  • Report Card time table
  • Honor Roll requirements
  • Calculation of GPA/rank-in-class and their overall importance
  • Character/principals/behavior/conduct
  • How do you learn? Where have you been? Where are you going?
  • Review of SHS graduation requirements
  • Introduction of Massachusetts State College and university entrance requirements
  • A four-year Plan of High School studies
  • Adjustment to high school expectations, homework time, tardiness, absenteeism, etc.
  • MCAS expectations and time table
  • A timetable for high school tests for the college bound, SAT, PSAT, ACT, SAT II etc.
  • A four year plan of high school studies/introduction
  • Proper planning time
  • Pacing long-term assignments
  • Utilizing the "Day Back" of each teacher
  • Options for providing study time after school
  • Job Placement possibilities through the Guidance Department
  • Work permits and job/school responsibilities
  • Building strong work habits in school and on the job
  • Avoiding peer pressure
  • Make wise decisions
  • Choosing friends
