Junior Year

The Next Step

The junior year is the time when the students advance the most in their active participation in the Guidance Program. The Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) is the first activity for juniors. All juniors will take this test during the fall. The district will cover the cost of the test. The test is administered at Salem High on the Wednesday national test date. Participation in the testing is the first overt sign that a junior is ready to begin the journey toward career or college.

When the results of the PSAT are returned to the school, juniors will have the opportunity to attend a review session with the counseling staff in order that the strengths and weaknesses of each student can be further explored. This also gives students the opportunity to test the reality of their intended college choices. Their scores can be compared with those of the middle 50% of students at the colleges in which they have an interest and they can make arrangement to meet further with their counselor and review their four-year plan.

Counselors will meet with juniors in class during the February/March time frame to assist students in the registration for spring SAT tests. Unlike PSAT registration, the SAT registration form can be quite intimidating initially. Deadlines are explained, a senior year testing plan is discussed, and juniors are excited about planning for their after graduation situations.

Counselors will meet with juniors to do a workshop with them
