Dear Students and Families of the Class of 2020,

Read this letter in Spanish and in Portuguese.

Greetings from Salem High School and I hope you are all safe and well. The spring of senior year is a time for students to be recognized for their hard work as well as participate in events that honor high achievement, celebrate with friends and classmates, and create memories that will last a lifetime. While 2020 will certainly be remembered by all, we’ve had to face the difficult reality that many of these eagerly anticipated events will happen in unusual ways, or will not happen at all. Throughout this school closure, and particularly after receiving the news that school buildings will not open for the remainder of the year, a team of students, teachers, parents, and administrators have worked to adapt or reschedule existing traditions, as well as create ways to celebrate this very special group of students.

I am pleased to inform you of the following events honoring the Salem High School Senior Class of 2020:

Events that will be occurring this spring:

  • The Senior Show will be reimagined as a Digital Sketch Show - date is still to be determined, please be on the lookout for the release date!
  • Spirit Week will take place May 18-May 22. Student leadership has determined a fun dress-up theme for each day while students have their last class with - and say farewell to - their teachers:
    May 18 - Character Day
    May 19 - USA Day
    May 21 -Salem Day
May 22 - College and Career Day
  • Seniors will participate in a “Week of Giving” from May 26-May 29 - this was to be a new event this year and is being reimagined in accordance with CDC Social Distancing guidelines.
  • The Senior Awards Night will take place virtually on May 28 at 7 PM. It will be broadcast on Zoom and also on SATV.
  • A Salem School Community Car Parade is scheduled to take place on June 5 at 6PM (with a rain date of June 6 at 2 PM). This will tentatively take place on Fort Ave and Memorial Drive and will consist of staff, students, and families (as able) participating in a safe and socially distant parade of vehicles while the streets are lined with graduates and family members in accordance with CDC guidelines.
  • A digital graduation ceremony is tentatively scheduled (pending confirmation from our cap and gown distributor) to take place on June 25 at 6 PM. It will be broadcast on Zoom and also on SATV.

Other celebrations you’ll see popping up this spring include lawn signs, a banner celebrating all of Salem’s graduates, and a speech by our Salem High School Valedictorian broadcast on NECN.

Events that have been rescheduled for the fall, pending CDC guidance for gatherings during this time include:
  • The yearbook signing will take place on Wednesday, November 25 after the annual Pep Rally. The Class of 2020 will finally get their traditional drive around the building afterward!
  • The Senior Prom has been rescheduled for Friday, November 27 and will take place at Ipswich Country Club. Unfortunately, the traditional after prom party cannot be held.
  • The in-person graduation ceremony will be held on Saturday, November 28 at Salem High School.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me with any questions or concerns, or if you have any additional ideas that will safely celebrate our incomparable Salem High School Class of 2020.

Sincerely,
Samantha J. Meier, Ed.D
Principal, Salem High School
