Culinary Arts students learn to cook, bake and prepare for a career in the restaurant and hospitality industry.
Scholars study safety and sanitation, cooking techniques, knife skills, and nutrition, as well as training in front of house (service) as well as the back of house (kitchen).
Additionally, scholars receive training in management and entrepreneurial skills, and earn certifications in OSHA and ServSafe.
The Black Cat Bistro, located in SHS and open to staff and community partners, provides scholars a variety of work-based learning experiences including cooking and serving at events for the Council on Aging and the Salem Rotary Club.
Upper class students also participate in cooperative education and are employed at local area restaurants to hone their skills.
Salem High School recently received over $150,000 from MA Capital funding for the Culinary Arts program and recently built a state-of-the-art kitchen.
Graduates develop the necessary skills for food and hospitality occupations as well as pursuing post-secondary education.
